Ente Gondola: Who Sets the Venice Gondola Tariff

Search for the Ente Gondola and you find a name that behaves like an institution and no way to buy anything. That is the correct result. It is not a ticket office: the price you pay at a stand comes from a resolution of the Comune di Venezia, and the association side of the story is a trade body of self-employed gondoliers, not a company selling rides. This page sorts out who does what, so you know whose rule you are quoting at a price list.

What the Ente Gondola is, and what it is not

The formal body behind the name was the Istituzione per la Conservazione della Gondola e la Tutela del Gondoliere — for the conservation of the gondola and the protection of the gondolier — created by the city council in April 1995. It was wound up by council resolution no. 40 of 29 July 2016, and its functions were taken back inside the departments of the Comune di Venezia. Both facts are recited in the 2023 tariff resolution itself.

So when a review site says “the Ente Gondola sets the price”, read it as shorthand. Three actors are involved:

The name survives in two places: the association’s website, gondolavenezia.it, and review-site listings titled “Ente Gondola” collecting ratings for gondola rides in general. Neither is a booking channel.

The tariff, and who wrote it

The rates in force were approved by resolution no. 89 of the Giunta Comunale on 20 April 2023 and applied from 1 November 2023. They replaced the 2014 rates of €80 and €100 after an ISTAT adjustment of 12.59% between 2014 and 2022; the 1 November start date was requested by the gondoliers’ association. The same resolution sets the rule for the future: an ISTAT revaluation every five years.

Read it the way the city writes it: per boat, not per person, maximum five passengers under article 26 of the municipal regulation. The resolution also allows the length of a tour to shift by a few minutes for traffic, tide and weather — a real clause, not an excuse invented at the stand.

On extensions there is no municipal price list at all. The Comune’s tariff page says only that “for any other service of a different duration the price is calculated in proportion to the time”, and the operative part of resolution 89/2023 sets the two rates and nothing else — no block, no per-minute figure. The €45-by-day and €55-at-night numbers you will see quoted for 20 extra minutes appear in neither document. Treat them as a rule of thumb the trade uses, not a tariff, and get your own total agreed out loud before you board. A serenade is outside the tariff too: the musicians are a separate cost, and your gondolier does not sing.

Where the official documents live

Three places, all municipal:

• The tariff and the stazi list: the Comune di Venezia page “Tariffe, orari e stazi Servizio Gondola”. It names the ten stands — Danieli, Molo, Dogana, Trinità, Santa Maria del Giglio, San Tomà, San Beneto (Bacino Orseolo), Carbon, Santa Sofia and San Marcuola — each with a phone number and an email for information and reservations. That is the only official contact route to the association behind a stand.
• The resolution: DG 89/2023, four pages in Italian, on the city’s council-resolutions portal.
• The rulebook: the 2020 municipal regulation for the public gondola service — licences, discipline, uniform, boat, passengers.

The association’s own site is the weak link. When we checked it, gondolavenezia.it returned a server error, and its archived tariff pages still showed the pre-2023 rates of €80 and €100 for up to six passengers — a limit that no longer applies. A page quoting those numbers is reading an old copy.

How someone becomes a gondolier

The licence is a personal municipal document and obliges the holder to row the service himself. The regulation caps the number at 440 and only the Comune can change it; about 400 gondoliers work at any given time.

The route in is longer than the exam stories suggest. A candidate must first be entered in the register of gondola-service operators held by the Venice Chamber of Commerce, then work as a sostituto — a substitute gondolier — for at least six months, and only then compete for a licence in a public selection judged on qualifications. The training behind the register place is the part travellers hear about: roughly 400 hours over about six months, a rowing test and examinations in history and foreign languages. Giorgia Boscolo became the first fully licensed woman gondolier in August 2010.

Discipline sits with the Comune too: the competent municipal manager acts on reports from the bancali or from any other person, with a disciplinary commission and the Polizia Locale checking boats, uniform and conduct.

If you are asked for more than the tariff

The rate is identical at every stand, so an inflated quote is not a negotiation.

1. Ask to see the table. Article 25 requires it at the stazio, on the boarding pontoon and in every gondola. No table, no deal.
2. Fix the total and the duration out loud before boarding — 30 minutes at €90 by day, 35 at €110 after 19:00, for the whole boat.
3. Separate the extras. Extra time and music are priced on top; the route is free to agree.
4. Walk away if the numbers do not match. The next stand charges the same.
5. Report it to the stand’s association using the contact on the municipal page, or to the Polizia Locale, with date, time and stand.

Tariff or booking: which suits your group

For four or five people the tariff is unbeatable: €90 split five ways is €18 each. For one or two travellers a shared online ride is usually cheaper, and it comes with a slot and a cancellation policy the association does not offer.

Walk up and you choose the stand and agree the route, but you queue in season with nothing in writing. Book and you get a fixed per-person price, a voucher and free cancellation on most rides, but you share the boat. Verdict

As an entity to book with, the Ente Gondola is a dead end — useful information rather than a complaint. As a reference, the paperwork behind the name is the strongest protection a gondola passenger has: one tariff, displayed by law, with a named contact for every stand and a disciplinary route inside the Comune di Venezia.
