Venice Gondola Ride Prices

How much is a gondola ride in Venice? At an official stand, €90 for 30 minutes — per gondola, not per person, for up to five passengers. After 19:00 it rises to €110 for 35 minutes. Those two figures come from the official tariff published by the Comune di Venezia (Ente Gondola), in force since 2023 and unchanged for 2026.

Booked online, the pricing model flips: shared rides are sold per person, from €31.20, and private rides are sold per boat, from €80. That difference is the whole story of this page. Prices checked September 2026.

The per-person maths

The tariff is the same whether one person or five sits in the boat. Divide it.

Now set that against the cheapest shared ride online, €31.20 per person. The break-even is just under three people by day, and just over two and a half in the evening.

The rule of thumb: one or two of you, book a shared ride online. Three or more, walk to a stand and pay the tariff — you get the whole boat, you choose the route with the gondolier, and nobody sits between you.

The price ladder: every ride, cheapest first

“Priced” tells you what the number covers. Per person means each seat; per boat means the whole gondola, up to five passengers.

One line in that table needs reading twice: the €132.50 private walking tour is priced per group, not per person, and the gondola is an option you select while booking rather than part of the base price. Check that the total on the payment screen includes the ride before you pay.

Three things fall out of that ladder. First, everything between €31 and €43 is essentially the same 30-minute ride with different extras bolted on. Second, the €80 private ride is cheaper than the official €90 stand tariff, which makes it the single best-value private boat in the list. How prices differ by platform

The same shared 30-minute ride sits on all three of our partner platforms at slightly different prices, because each one packages it differently.

GetYourGuide has the largest catalogue and free cancellation up to 24 hours on most rides, with reserve-now-pay-later on many. Tiqets issues instant mobile tickets and is strongest on combinations with museums. Headout tends to price competitively and uses escorted boarding at the meeting point.

Viator is not a partner of ours, so treat this as a neutral observation: it lists broadly the same products, often from the same local suppliers, usually at €2–5 more, with 24-hour cancellation. We compare all four on our booking platform comparison.

Whichever you use, the gondola itself is identical. You are not buying a better boat at €43 than at €31 — you are buying a longer listed duration, an audio guide, a smaller group or an evening slot.

Hidden costs to budget for

• Musicians. A serenade is never included in the €90. Musicians are negotiated separately, typically from €50 per boat.
• Extra time. €45 for each additional 20 minutes by day, €55 at night. Agree the total before you board.
• The evening switch. Crossing 19:00 costs €20 more for five extra minutes. Details on our sunset and night rides page.
• Tips. Not expected. €5–10 is generous, not obligatory.
• Payment method. Some gondoliers take cards, some only cash. Carry cash if you are walking up.
• Platform fees. The headline price is what you pay, but check the total at checkout before confirming.

Gondoliers are legally required to display the tariff. If someone quotes you more than €90 for a standard 30-minute daytime ride, walk to the next stand — there are around 400 licensed gondoliers in the city and the boats are not scarce.

When the stand beats booking online

Walking up wins when you have three or more people, when you want to choose the route rather than take a fixed loop, and in the off-season, when there is no queue anywhere.

Booking online wins when you are one or two people, when you need a guaranteed time slot in July, and when you want free cancellation. It also wins if you want the ride to start on a schedule — at a busy stand in August you may wait 30–45 minutes.

The stands themselves differ. Bacino Orseolo, behind Piazza San Marco, has the most boats and the longest queues. San Tomà, Santa Sofia and Ferrovia have fewer boats but almost no wait. The €2 gondola: the traghetto

The cheapest gondola ride in Venice costs €2. The traghetto is a plain, older gondola rowed by two gondolieri that ferries people straight across the Grand Canal in two to five minutes. Non-residents pay €2, residents €0.70, in cash, handed to the gondolier.

Crossings run at Santa Sofia to the Rialto market, San Tomà to Sant’Angelo, Santa Maria del Giglio to the Salute, and Riva del Carbon to Riva del Vin by the Rialto Bridge, plus occasional services at San Marcuola and Dogana. Hours vary — roughly 09:00 to 18:00 or 19:00, shorter on Sundays and in winter, and several routes run on weekdays only.

It is not a sightseeing ride. There is no route, no commentary and no seat unless you insist — locals stand. But it is a real gondola, rowed by real gondolieri, and it saves a 15-minute walk to the nearest bridge. Our traghetto guide lists the crossings in detail.

How to save without downgrading

• Fill the boat. Five people at a stand is €18 each, the lowest per-person figure available for a proper ride.
• Ride before 19:00. In June and July that still means golden light.
• Go in November–February. No queues, fog on the water, same tariff.
• Skip the extension and skip the musicians if the budget is tight — neither changes the route.
• Take a combo only if you want the other half. €39 for the monuments-and-gondola day is excellent; €59.50 for a walking tour you would not otherwise book is not a saving.
• Use the traghetto for the €2 novelty and put the money into a longer private ride you will remember.

Getting to the stands

Vaporetto stops San Marco-Vallaresso and San Zaccaria serve the San Marco stands; Rialto, San Tomà and Accademia serve the Grand Canal ones. From Santa Lucia station or Piazzale Roma it is a 30–35 minute walk to San Marco, or Line 1 down the Grand Canal.

So, how much is a gondola ride in Venice? Anywhere from €2 to €427.50, and the honest answer for most travellers is €18–45 per person: the official €90 tariff split between three to five people, or a €31–39 shared ride booked online for one or two. Everything above that buys time, privacy, prosecco, photographs or music — not a better gondola. Decide which of those you actually want before you book, and check how and where to book once you have.
